I've been getting slack about this lately...but ever since I've started watching the first season of DBZ I have to say the standards that go back and forth from action to some comedy keep a series long. Looking at all the 200+ series shows like DBZ, Inuyasha, Ranma 1/2, Soon to be Naruto as well, they all have segments that mix between action/drama and comedy.

Granted that doesn't always mean its great, but its well accepted by the mean of the anime fans. Mean as in average, not angry :P

To myself personally, its got to be drawn beautiful (rahxephon), make you cry (countless shows) and be at least a full normal season of 23-26 eps.

I don't usual find GREAT shows that are 12 or 14 eps long.

Yeah, been watching a lot more anime again.
